Sixth Class Novels (Wonder)

This term, Mr Kennedy’s sixth class are currently reading the International Bestseller ‘Wonder’ written by R.J. Palacio. It’s about a boy who can’t blend in but was born to stand out .This book has power to move hearts and change minds and wreaks emotional havoc.
The main characters are Auggie, Via, Mom ,Dad, Jack, Julian and Summer. We learn how they go through their daily lives and how they cope with their problems.
The Bookseller said it was “Tremendously moving… an uplifting, hopeful and important book” and we agree.

Remembering Victims of the Holocaust.

Last November the 6th class pupils planted yellow crocus bulbs. During the week of January 27th, which was the Holocaust Remembrance Day, we checked them. We did this to remember all the Jewish men, women and children who died in World War Two who were forced to wear the star of David. We remember all these Jewish people who died, to make sure a genocide like this never happens again. We hope that by remembering and learning about the Holocaust we can prevent it from happening in the present or in the future.

A big thank you to Kevin who made the wooden Star of David to mark this special flower bed.

Dé Céadaoin Arís!

We are nearly there!

On Wednesday, 13th March 2019, Alexandra College Trad Band will join us for our Seachtaine na Gaeilge Concert. They have joined us every year for the past 12 years. We all join together and play our favorite pieces.

Then on the evening of Thursday 14th March 2019 we will visit Alexandra College to join them for their annual “Ceol le Cheile”. We have great memories of these visits over the past 4 years. On the Thursday some of our past pupils will join us. They are in Secondary School and College now, and all still playing music and are studying music in school and university. Some are studying to be Primary School Teachers. We also will be joined by our friends at school who train as Irish Dancers and some of our past pupils are helping them with the steps. Our teachers are also playing with us. Come along and be part of the evening. Admission is FREE and Alexandra College give us a great welcome and a big hall for all the guests. See you there.

We are perfecting our pieces. Mr. Fell’s traditional pieces are really improving and we are great with the slow air and jig that Mr Kelly taught the group for the competition in October. We have some Marching Band pieces! Mrs. Macnamara really likes the marching bands! They are different to Trad!  Also our original Trad Group have been working on some new pieces. Please join us at 7:30 in Alexandra College: 14/03/2019

Here is how we sound today….

Come and join us!

The Spirit gives us what we need
To live our lives each day.

The Spirit brings
Love – the Spirit lives !
Joy – the Spirit dances !
Peace – the Spirit rests !
Patience – the Spirit waits !
Kindness – the Spirit gives !
Goodness – the Spirit breathes !
Gentleness – the Spirit acts !
Faithfulness – the Spirit lasts !
Self-Control – the Spirit cares !
The Spirit cares ! The Spirit cares

Oh what a Spirit-filled day this is,
What a Spirit-filled day, my Lord
You have called us each by name,
We give ourselves to you
On this Spirit-filled day

PICTIONARY! Room 18

PICTIONARY

There are lots of different ways of communicating!

We can think in pictures and draw…getting our message across to others without talking!

Drawing is a great way communicate.

“Pictionary” is lots of fun.

We roll the dice, get move to a colour on the board, and we have to draw the thing on the play card matching our colour.

We all draw our “thing” at the same time and then we share our pictures and hope our friends can guess our thoughts!

It’s working….

Here is the Gallery of our last two weeks of play…..

Scientific Art with Bubbles: Room 28

We were doing materials in Science with vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and it made a big reaction!

  • First we experimented with solids and liquids
  • We were testing for a reversible and irreversible change
  • We had great fun doing science
  • We learned that bicarbonate of soda and vinegar caused a chemical reaction. The acid in the vinegar caused the explosion!

Today, Friday, we did this experiment again using food colouring.

  • It was very colourful!
  • It was foamy……….

We are scientists and artists!

What do you think?

Science Week Rm 26: Playing the Bananas

We had a great time during Science Week.

In our classroom we learned to use how to play the bananas and the bongo pencil case.

We used:

  • The Classroom Computer
  • The Interactive Whiteboard
  • A Makey Makey Circuit Board
  • Bananas
  • Pupils
  • Items from our pencil case

First we connected the bananas to the Makey Makey circuit board and the circuit board to the computer.

We held one wire and touched the bananas to close the circuit and play the bananas.

We also tested items from our pencil case and found out that the wood of a pencil and the nib didn’t work but pencil lead drawn on paper worked. We also found out that plastic, markers, pencil grip and rubber didn’t work, but a paper clip, a metal key-ring, the metal part of a pen did work.

After that, we tested how many people could carry the current in the circuit and play the bongo drums. We held hands and the first and last person in the line held the clips attached to the circuit board. We figured out that it would travel through 32 people and still work.

We had a great time!!

Rm 26: Testing the Fish Tank

Every week we test how the fish are in our fish tank are. We test the water to make sure it is healthy for our fish and plants.

We test the Nitrates, Nitrites, Iron, PH and Ammonia. We also check the temperature. The chemicals in the tests cause a reaction. We wait 5 minutes for the results. It is amazing to see the colour changing as we wait.

We also add nutrients to the aquarium for the fish and plants. This is very good for the fish tank, it keeps the fish healthy and happy. It is very exciting and enjoyable to do the tests. We learn a lot from taking care of our fish and plants. It is good for the environment.
