Collecting our 2nd Green Flag

IMG_9711

IMG_9713 IMG_9712

Last week on Wednesday 25th May four members of our Green Schools’ Committee were invited to the Helix in Dublin at DCU to be awarded with our second Green Flag which was the Energy flag.

We went early in the morning on a minibus to Dublin. When we arrived we got photos taken with the Green Flag and the Green Schools’ mascots. We had a lovely lunch before we went into the theatre to get our flag.

We went up onto the stage and we were presented with the flag. We were a bit nervous but very excited. Well done everybody!

The Lifecycle of the Butterfly

2nd class learned all about the lifecycle of the butterfly. We learned how a butterfly lays eggs on a leaf they grow and turn into a caterpillar. Next the caterpillar eats a lot and forms a cocoon. This is called a chyrsalis or a pupa. When it comes out of this stage it is a beautiful butterfly. We all love butterflies.

Later on we did some art work! Our butterflies were lovely and colourful!

6th Debating Team 2016

This was the first year Sallins NS had a debating team. There were boys and girls on the team and we spent hours researching, writing speeches and practicing our speeches.  Ms McKenna helped us and guided us. We would like to thank her for all her help.

All of us were from 6th class and we thought we did a pretty good job representing our school this year in some friendly debates with local schools and in the debating competition. We would all agree that it was a great experience for us all and we enjoyed it.

The team received their certificates last week in recognition of all of their hard work . We all think that they were fantastic!! Well done!IMG_9502

4th class visit The Irish Open!

We were very lucky to get an invitation to go to the K Club for the Irish Open. All of us in 4th class were to go. We went on Thursday 19th May. We were all very excited and really looking forward to our day out. We hoped we would see some golfers that we knew!!

It was very wet while we were on the bus going there but when we got off the bus the rain stopped. We had to walk a lot at the start and we watched some of the golf. We had to wait until the golfers went by before we could cross over. We had our lunch and each class was booked in for an hour for some indoor golfing activities. We really enjoyed all of the activities and there were four of them all together. We were divided into four groups and each group did a different activity and then swopped. We got our faces painted and we got a bag.

We went over to the putting green to watch some of the golfers practicing before they started their round.

Then we went to the 1st tee to see Rory Mc Ilroy teeing off. Everybody gave him a big cheer and he had a great shot.

When he had gone we had to walk back to the bus to go home.

We enjoyed the day and the K Club looked beautiful.

5th class find out about starch.

During Science this week we learned about starch in different types of food. We used some iodine and got some different types of food. We used a pipette to add a few drops of iodine to each piece of food. We made  sure that we put the same number of drops on each piece of food. We had to observe and then record any changes. We recorded any changes in a table in our copies. We discovered that if starch was in a piece of food it would turn a blue/black colour. If it wasn’t it stayed a yellow/orange colour. Have a look at some of our results.

Fairy Cakes: 2nd Class in Room 18

We baked fairy cakes today!  They were delicious!  We might bake them again at home!

We mixed:

90g   Self-raising flour

90g   Caster sugar

90g   Stork margarine

2        Eggs

1/2tsp Vanilla essence

We baked them in paper cases in the oven: 190 degrees for 15 minutes. The baking smell was lovely! Some people came in to visit and ask us about our baking! 😄 Baking is a great way to share time and chat with friends, and practice maths, reading and science!

We made icing: It was so easy!

90g   Icing sugar mixed with a table spoon of water! Sprinkles are pretty!

We made 12 fairy cakes! They didn’t last long!

Follow our blog and also visit our school website. There are lots more recipes and slide shows to try out if you click on the drop down menu ‘Cooking Together’
