The Lord Is My Light & Spirit Filled Day & Moving On Up! Confirmation 2018

Our families and friends can be prepared for singing with us at our Confirmation Ceremony by listening to these  backing tracks:

The Lord is My Light

Psalm

The Lord is my Light

The lord is my Help

The Lord is my salvation X2

Verse 1

The Lord is my light,

My help, my salvation.

Why should I fear,

With God I fear no one.

God protects me all my life.

With the Lord what should I fear?

Refrain x2

Verse 2

There is one thing I ask of the Lord that I long for,

All of my days with God to be dwelling,

Gazing with awe at the beauty of God,

And in wonder look on God’s house.

Refrain x2

Verse 3

I know I will live to see the Lord’s goodness,

Now, in this life I’m sure I will see it. Trust in the Lord, be strong and be brave;

Wait in hope for God, our salvation.

The Gathering Song to begin Our Celebration of Confirmation is

THE SPIRIT SONG

Spirit Filled Day

Oh what a Spirit-filled day this is,
What a Spirit-filled day, my Lord
You have called us each by name,
We give ourselves to you
On this Spirit-filled day
What a Spirit-filled day, my Lord
The Spirit gives us what we need
To live our lives each day.

The Spirit brings
Love – the Spirit lives !
Joy – the Spirit dances !
Peace – the Spirit rests !
Patience – the Spirit waits !
Kindness – the Spirit gives !
Goodness – the Spirit breathes !
Gentleness – the Spirit acts !
Faithfulness – the Spirit lasts !
Self-Control – the Spirit cares !
The Spirit cares ! The Spirit cares

Our Recessional Hymn to close our celebration of Confirmation is:

Moving On Up Now …. Out of the Darkness…. My Light Shines On!

Moving on Up

Verse 1
I was blind
But now I see!
You made a believer
Out of me!
Said I was blind
But now I see!
You made a believer
Out of me!
And I’m moving on up now
Out of the darkness!
My light shines on
My light shines on
My light shines on!

Verse 2
I was lost
But now I’m found!
I believe in you
Ain’t got no bounds!
Said I was lost
But now I’m found!
I believe in you
Ain’t got no bounds!
And I’m moving on up now
Out of the darkness!
My light shines on
My light shines on
My light shines on!
Yes I’m moving on up now
Out of the darkness!
My light shines on
My light shines on
My light shines on!

Christmas in Room 14

We have been having lots of festive fun here in room 14 in the build up to Christmas time. We would like to share some of the things we have been doing with our friends and families.

One of the things we love to do at Christmas time is to decorate the Christmas tree. We made paper ball reindeer as a decoration to take home to our Christmas trees. Another big tradition at this time of year is Christmas cards. We used finger painting and crepe paper to create cards with some of Santa’s reindeer on the front. We also made these fun elf envelopes to deliver our cards in.

As a festive treat last Friday and to warm up from all the ice, snow and cold weather we made some hot chocolate with Ms. Reidy. We poured our hot chocolate into the polar bear paper cups we designed the day before. We added marshmallows and chocolate chips to the top.  It tasted delicious.

We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas from all the boys and girls in room 14 and Ms. Reidy.

6th Class Willow Weaving

Last Tuesday and Wednesday Beth Murphy came into our 6th classes and taught us how to weave with willow. She showed us different types of Willow. She also showed us how to make a small Christmas Tree.

Step 1:

She gave us a thick piece of Willow to start our frame. We made a triangle with the Willow.

Step 2:

We used thin Willow to make the top of the tree by weaving it around the frame and trunk of the tree.

Step 3:

We used new willow to continue the tree and add colour.

Step 4:

We used buff willow to complete the tree.

Step 5:

When we finished, Beth helped trim the tree. We decorated our trees with ribbon.

Beth showed us a video about willow weaving and some of here pieces.

We enjoyed it and we would like to do it again.

Make Your Own Mini Pizzas

Miniature Pizzas

Last Friday we made some tasty mini pizzas with Ms. Reidy!

This is the recipe we followed to make them:

Method:
1. We chopped the mushrooms and ham into slices (optional).
2. We rolled small handfuls of pre-made pizza dough into round pizza base shapes with our hands and two rolling pins.
3. We added a tablespoon of pizza sauce to the pizza bases and we spread it evenly around the centre.
4. We sprinkled some grated cheese (whatever cheese you like) on top and we layered our pizzas with your chosen toppings (We put ham. cheese and mushrooms on ours).
5. We placed them on a baking tray and put them in the oven for 25 minutes.

Now, we hope you enjoy our delicious home-made pizza recipe and recommend you try making them at home!

THANKSGIVING! American Style Pancakes to Share with the Family and Friends!

Hello from ROOM 18

COOK WITH US!

THANKSGIVING PANCAKES!

Davey is really interested in reading about world histories!

Thursday was THANKSGIVING DAY in America.

Davey had read about the origin of this FEAST and told us all about the first THANKSGIVING of the pilgrims. We celebrated by making and sharing American Style Pancakes.

Firstly we watched this VIDEO!

American blueberry pancakes:

You can watch it too! We read the instructions on the video and watched the steps!

 WE WILL NEED

  • 1 tsp Baking powder & a pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 300ml milk
  • Knob of butter
  • 150g pack of blueberries
  • Sunflower oil or a little butter for cooking

Method

  • Mix together the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt in a large bowl.
  • Beat the egg with the milk, make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients.
  • Whisk in the milk to make a thick smooth batter. Beat in the melted butter, and gently stir in half the blueberries.

Rugby Season So Far

School rugby is back again for another year. We have four teams this year, A, B, C and D. The teams are made up of students from 3rd to 6th class. We have been training since Halloween and we have played two matches since then.

For our first match we travelled to Castleknock in Dublin. In this match it was only the A team playing because it was against 1st years. It was a very wet and windy day so the conditions were very hard to play in. After a tight first half Castleknock led by 5 points. We came back strong in the second half and pulled it back to a draw. They brought on their subs and that won it for them.

Training resumed on Tuesday and each team had a match against C.U.S the following week. Going into this match we were hoping for a win after losing our last match. The conditions were fine that day. The A team had a brilliant 1st half and by the time the whistle blew they were up 42-0. They kept their great lead in the second half and the game finished 75-0. We had the stronger teams on the day as three out of four teams won.

Well done to all the teams and we can’t wait for our next match!

Mini Scientist: How Healthy Is Healthy Food?

Our idea was to find out how much sugar is actually in protein bars . We chose this idea because we have been told that obesity has become a problem in Ireland. What we wanted to do to help is to try to find a way to make protein bars healthier, we chose protein bars because most people think they are healthy but they are not.

We researched to find out how much sugar is in each store bought bar by looking at the table at the back of the packet.

Recipe for oat bar:

Ingredients:

  • 350g of oats
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 180ml of almond milk
  • 2 eggs
  • Vanilla essence ( if wanted )
  • 1 tbsp of sweetener
  • A drizzle of honey

Method:

  1. Put oats into a bowl.
  2. Put wet ingredients into a bowl.
  3. Then stir.
  4. Add your dry ingredients into a bowl and stir.
  5. When done put the mixture into a tray.
  6. Put the tray into the oven for 12 minutes at 180 degrees.

Recipe for nut bar:

Ingredients:

  • 150g of oats
  • Hand full of nuts
  • A drizzle of honey
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 tbsp of sweetener
  • 180ml of almond milk
  • 2 eggs

Method:

  1. Put the oats and nuts into a bowl.
  2. Add wet Ingredients and stir.
  3. Add dry ingredients and stir.
  4. Put the mixture into a tray.
  5. Put into the oven for 12 minutes at 180 degrees.

Report

Our report is based on sugar and which protein bar is the best one to buy. It is also based on making our own protein bars using ingredients that you might have at home. We compared the shop bought verses homemade. Our prediction was that the homemade protein bars would taste better than the shop made one and will have less sugar. We also predict it will cost less. We think that the shop made protein bar will have a high amount of sugar.

Mini Scientist School Exhibition

On the Mini Scientists Day we found out that people preferred the nut bar than the vanilla extract one. We also found out that people would buy our homemade protein bars instead of the shop bought ones.

Conclusion

Our conclusion is that the homemade protein bars have less sugar in them than the shop bought ones and costs less. We found out that the worse one you can buy is the Nature Valley Bar with 6.2g of sugar. The best one you can buy is the Lidl brand Meal Pro with 0.8g of sugar. Our conclusion is that the homemade protein bars are healthier than the shop bought ones.

Mini-Scientists: What is a Dry Ice Bubble?

For our project we wanted to find out what a dry ice bubble is and how it forms.

We made the dry ice ourselves using a fire extinguisher instead of buying it because it can be expensive and hard to get on time.

We learned a lot during this project. We learned that carbon dioxide is what makes dry ice and that when carbon dioxide mixes with water it makes a solid bubble.

We really enjoyed doing this project and are very grateful for getting the chance of doing the Mini Scientist again this year!

Thank you!

How Social Media Affects Our Health.

We picked this topic because we wanted kids to know the dangers of social media. Our favourite part about doing this project was the surveys on our class and showing the judges, parents and kids on the day. It was a great experience for us and our school. We learned a lot from other projects too. We hope we can use all this information in the future and everyone else can too. We would like to thank the judges from Intel, Mrs. Keane for organising the mini scientist and all the staff for helping.

Which Liquid Cleans Metal The Best?

Hi, our names are Kieran, Dylan, Adam and Jack. Our project was ‘Which Liquid Cleans Metal the Best?’. We learned that the acid in the lemon juice cleaned the metal the best. We really enjoyed this opportunity to be able to do the mini scientists. We give a huge thanks to our parents and our teachers for helping us with our project.

DO DIFFERENT LIQUIDS EVAPORATE AT THE SAME RATE?

Lorcan: I am 11 years of age and I like soccer and GAA.

Cillian: I am 12 and I like soccer.

Glenn: I am 13 years of age and I like Film.

Szymon: I am 11 years of age and I like playing xbox and computer games.

Our project is based on evaporation and how different liquids can evaporate at various rates. We tested these rates by putting different liquids under the same level of heat for the same amount of time.

Science Fair

We had another really busy day today. It is Science Week. Yesterday we had the Intel Miniscientist and today we had to demonstrate our projects to all of the school in the morning and in the afternoon parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends came to see everything. We had a brilliant day! Everybody loved our projects and we got a chance to see everybody else’s projects too. We had great fun looking at all the different projects. They were cool. Lots of people wrote nice things in our books. We were tired at the 3 o’clock. We had a great day. We love Science Week.

Science Week

This week is Science Week in our school. It has been very busy for us. We had the Intel Miniscientist Competition yesterday. Judges from Intel came to our school and looked at all the projects from Mr Kelly’s 4th class and all of the 5th and 6th classes. We were all very excited and nervous but we had a great day. We all got a goodie bag and a certificate. There was one overall winner from Mr O’Neill’s 5th class and two groups were second, one from Mr Kelly’s 4th class and one from Mr Kennedy’s 6th class.

Paper Making Fun In Senior Infants

Senior Infants have been making paper in class from recycled paper, with help from Mrs. Crowe.  We had lots of fun and learned how paper is made.

We liked tearing up the used paper and squishing it in the water to make pulp!

Squishy, messy work!

Getting ready to turn the pulp into new paper.

Once we drained the water from the pulp it started to look like paper! Then we added things to the paper like dried flowers and glitter.

We used sponges to get more water out of the paper.

Pressing the new paper!

After a few days our paper is now ready to use. We can’t wait to use it for our Christmas Art!

We would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to Mrs. Crowe for coming in to help us.

‘FEET on FRIDAY!’

ACTIVE SCHOOLS COMMITTEE

This Friday, 10th of November is the first day of our new walk to school campaign; ‘Feet on Friday!’

The committee are encouraging all pupils to walk to school on Fridays.
The class with the highest percentage of walkers on Friday mornings will receive a reward.
If you are being driven to school, why not get dropped off at the community centre and walk from there, that way you can be included as a ‘walker’.
Don’t worry, pupils who travel to school on the bus won’t affect their class score.

Let’s put in a big effort and be sure to KEEP SAFE, walking on the footpaths and crossing only at traffic lights and with our Lollipop Lady.

Remember;
‘Keep active, keep fit, your body needs it!’
