Hurling Champions-June 2022

A Winning Return to Hurling Competitions – Bealtaine-Meitheamh 2022

BLITZ:

It was great to have Gaelic Games back again in the spring of 2022. Our School hurling team was made up of players from 5th and 6th classes. After several training sessions the boys were very excited to get to play in the Cumann na mBunscol Blitz in Eadestown GAA on 13th May.

The boys played three games, winning all three, showing great skill and determination throughout. Every player got plenty of game time throughout the blitz. Their performances on the day put the team through to the final on 2nd June.

FINAL     CLUICHE CEANNAIS:

St. Laurence’s NS, Sallins and Scoil Uí Riada, Kilcock played out an exciting and skilful game of hurling in the Division 2 Boys Final on Thursday 2nd June.

Although playing against the breeze, Scoil Uí Riada set the pace from the start. Their backs were first to every ball, quickly setting up attacks. Strong defending by Seán McDonagh and the Sallins full back line kept Scoil Uí Riada at bay, but they were getting closer and closer to getting the first score of the game. Their efforts were rewarded with a well taken goal, a great finish from a tight angle to left of the Sallins goal.
Scoil Uí Riada continued to push forward with Sallins finding it difficult to keep the sliotar in their opponents half of the field, their goalkeeper, Conor Fagan making some important blocks to prevent another goal.

Sallins finally began to find their feet and points from Paddy Cooke and Cillian McCarthy got them back into the game. A lovely point by Harry Brennan from way out on the ring wing levelled the scores; 1-0 to 0-3.
Sallins began to win more ball in their half forward line and on the stroke of half time, Paddy Cooke found the net, quickly getting the sliotar into his hand and striking, after great defensive blocks by the Scoil Uí Riada defenders.
Sallins led by a goal at half time.

The second half proved to be a tense affair. Sallins started well and scored their fourth point of the game early in the half through Eoin Nugent. Sallins created several good chances but that fourth point was to be their last score of the game, with Scoil Uí Riada’s centre back and wing back and defending superbly.

A great contest continued throughout the half as Scoil Uí Riada’s midfield pair pushed them forward. The Kilcock side scored another two points and laid siege to the Sallins goal for the final minutes of the game. Sallins managed to keep clearing their lines when it mattered with Ross Chapman and Angad Bawa winning several vital balls.
Both teams gave everything and showed wonderful skill and determination throughout.
Final Score:
St. Laurence’s NS, Sallins. 2-4
Scoil Uí Riada, Kilcock.       1-2

Well done to all of the players, they have done their school proud!

A big Thank You to parent, Gavin Cooke who helped coach the team throughout the term, and to all of the parents for their support.

Good luck to the 6th class boys and to Harry Brennan in 5th who have moved onto their new schools.

Keep hurling lads!

Hurling Team Receive their Medals

Senior Hurling Champions Receive Medals – Fuair Seaimpíní Iomána a mBoinn.

The Senior Hurling team received an early Christmas present on Tuesday 20th December, as they were presented with their winners’ medals.

We were delighted to welcome past pupils, Jack Couch and Stephen Moran to present the medals to our players from 5th and 6th class. Both Jack and Stephen represented St. Laurence’s NS across a variety of sports and were on the first school team to win the very competition our current hurlers won last October. Both currently play for Sallins/Wolfe Tones Senior Hurling team and have represented Kildare on the inter-county stage.

After presenting the medals Jack and Stephen gave some words of encouragement and advice to our team and the players then enjoyed a pizza treat.

Well done to all of the players, they all put in a great effort throughout the term and were deserving winners. A big Thank You to Jack and Stephen for giving of their time to present the medals and speak to the players, we wish them the best of luck in the season ahead.

Sallins Abú!

Hurlers Retain their Title!

Sallins Retain Hurling Title

Tuesday 25th October 2022

It was all on the line! The St. Laurence’s boys hurling team made up of mainly 6th class and some 5th class got on the bus and headed for Hawkfield where the schools division II final was taking place.

When we got to the pitch the coaches Mr Kennedy and Ms Norton gave us the jerseys and named the starting 15.

We had already won two matches to get to this moment and we wanted to remain as Division 2 champions, a title we won last season.

The match against Scoil Ui Riada, Kilcock started and after 10 minutes St. Laurence’s were losing. But, we found our winning formula and started to put points on the board. We had a comfortable lead at half time and our coaches got us into a huddle and our coaches, captain and vice-captain said a few words. We made a few changes and we drove through the second half scoring even more.

When the final whistle blew we were delighted. The final score was 3-9 to 0-4 in favour of Sallins. After we shook hands with the opposing team’s players, an official from the county board congratulated both teams and he called our captain up to him. Our captain thanked the fans, coaches and players from both sides and raised the trophy into the air and that was when the celebrations started. We all got to hold the trophy and we enjoyed the ride home as champions.

Special thanks to our coaches Mr Kennedy and Ms Norton and all the travelling fans.

WORLD BOOK DAY 2022

As part of World Book Day 2022, we were delighted to link up with Petra from CLEVERFOXBOOKS.COM, a local Sallins based online bookshop.

Petra of CLEVERFOX BOOKS came to our school on Wednesday 23rd March and kindly facilitated an exchange of World Book Day tokens for new books. This allowed every child in our school to use their free World Book Day token to get a brand new book of their choice!

The excitement and the joy was evident as each child in each class arrived into the PE hall and selected their own book.

World Book Day is all about encouraging everyone to read more and to enjoy reading.

We would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Petra and everyone at CLEVERFOXBOOKS.COM for giving us a full day of their time and giving every pupil the chance to take home a lovely new book to read.

Sporting Success for Past Pupils

St. Patrick’s week brought great success for some of our past pupils.

On a sunny Lá Fhéile Pádraig in Croke Park; Colm Dalton, Seán McDonnell and Stephen Kelly took to the field with Naas CBS as they looked to win their first Hogan Cup. The Hogan Cup is the All Ireland Competition for Secondary Schools’ Boys Senior football teams.

Naas CBS beat St. Brendan’s of Killarney in a brilliantly competitive and skillful game of football.

All of us here in Sallins NS, would like to congratulate the boys on their wonderful achievement of securing an All-Ireland medal!

Just a few days later on Sunday 20th March, the Ireland Under 20’s Rugby team took on Scotland in Musgrave Park. Their convincing win secured them a Grand Slam win for their Six Nations Championship.

Past pupil, Diarmuid Mangan is part of the team and we would like to congratulate him on the great achievement of representing his country and on a brilliant Championship win!

We are delighted that, like many of our past pupils, they have continued to develop their skills in sport and most importantly, that they continue to keep active and enjoy their games.

Comhgairdeachas daoibh, Diarmuid, Stephen, Seán agus Colm!!

Mini Scientist Grand Final 👩‍🔬👩‍🔬👩‍🔬 POSTED JUNE 2020: MEMORIES

On Wednesday the 29th of January, we headed off to Maynooth University for the Intel mini scientist grand final. We got there bright and early to prepare our project, “What is the science behind Rollercoasters.” From 11:15 to 13:15, five judges came around to judge our project. They said they were very impressed with our project, especially our booklet. 🙂

As we walked through the university we were fascinated by the design of the building. We got lunch and yummy hot chocolate. After our lunch, we went back to the Aula Maxima for the awards ceremony.

We were overwhelmed when we heard our names being called out for two awards. One award for excellence in science and another for the best project booklet. We were so happy when we found out that we had the best project booklet in Ireland. We received an exquisite trophy for the school.

We had a great day out! We would like to thank Mrs Molyneaux, Mr Kennedy, our parents and our classmates for supporting us along the way.

6th class- Confirmation

The Confirmations of 2020 are on the 29th of February in the Sallins church.
The candidates have been learning about the fruits, gifts and the symbols of the holy spirit leading up to their Confirmation. On the 29th of January the candidates had their ceremony of light, this is their second step in their Confirmation journey the first step being the enrollment mass, on the 18th of October. Mrs. MacNamara taught them all the songs for the Ceremony of Light e.g. Moving on up, the Psalm and Christ be our Light. Some of them will be included in their Confirmation. They have been learning lots of new prayers for the conformation such as the Nicene Creed and the Gloria. They have been doing lots of work in their religion book and thinking about what the holy spirit would do in some hard situations.
We know that they are looking forward to their confirmation and becoming adults in the eyes of the church.

Ceremony of Light 2020

On the 9th of January 2020 the sixth classes had their Ceremony of Light in Sallins church at 7:30pm. We wore our uniforms and we brought our Baptismal candles . We sang songs, we had Seán bring up the Paschal candle, Charlie read a reading from Isaiah. Kate, Leah and Ailbhe sang the Psalm.

We had our Confession and afterwards our parents brought up our candles to have them lit. They passed the candle on to us we said a prayer and extinguished the flame. We sang the last song of the mass and the priest ended the mass. We really enjoyed the evening and we are excited to make our Confirmation!

We would like to thank all the priests who took part in the mass, all sixth class teachers and Ms. MacNamara for helping us learn our prayers and songs.

Mini Scientist Regionals 2019

Investigation: What is the science behind roller-coasters? Team members; Chloe, Kate, Lucy & Ailbhe.

We had to get up at 7:00am as our bus was leaving at 7:30 am😪. The bus ride felt so long as we were so tired! When we arrived at Blanchardstown IT we set up our board and roller-coaster. The event started at 9:00 am.

We had a lot of time to check out all of the other projects. The judges came around to us at about 11:00 am. We explained our project to them . After that we got our lunch and watched a science show by science Sue. We were called up to the stage to assist Sue in her experiments.  Her theme was potential and kinetic energy so we were experts!

Then at about 1:30pm it was the award ceremony.
The judges called out the names of the projects moving forward on to the next round. We didn’t hear our names straight away so we were having doubts😓 . But then, we heard our names being called out! We ran up to the stage and received our medals and trophy!🏆

We got our pictures taken with the Intel judges with our rewards. We took down our rollercoaster and wrapped our board in a plastic bag and went home on the mini bus.🚌

Our beautiful and shiny trophy🏆

Us getting advice from the balloon lady🎈

6th Class Boys Soccer

The 6th Class soccer team played 3 games against Kildare schools. Our first match was against Ballymany school in Newbridge.

We played Ballymany in Newbridge Town astro. It was a very tight game. The score finished 2-2. We started the match brightly and got a deserved goal by Jake Connolly. Around five minutes later Ballymany scored to go level. Both teams came close to scoring but the  game finished 1-1 at the end of the first half.

We came out strong in the second half and dominated the first 15 minutes and Cameron Keane scored a brilliant goal to get us ahead. We fought very hard but they scored a fluky goal near the end. It was a great performance from the team. We are currently in preparation for the 5 aside blitz in Kilcullen astro.

6th Class Maths – Ratio (22.03.19)

This week Mr. Kennedy’s 6th class focused on  a topic called “Ratio” in maths.
In maths Ratio is a way of showing the similarities between quantities of something. We learned how to simplify a Ratio by dividing both parts by the same number. We were given baskets of different items such as lollipop sticks, cubes, counters and cards.
E.G. The ratio of apples: oranges is 4:6.
Divide both numbers by 2.

Seanfocail

Seanfhocail

As part of Seachtaine na Gaeilge our school took part in a seanfhocail art competition. Some took on the challenge themselves and the rest were in pairs. We had to illustrate a poster to describe our seanfhocal. When we finished our posters they were put on display and some school staff members chose the best described seanfhocal from each class. On Friday the 15th the winners from each class were announced and they went to the small hall to receive their prize.

On Friday 22nd of March,We hosted a coffee morning in Ms. O’Connor’s room in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. If anyone wanted to come along for a treat and a drink, they would need to donate a minimum of 1 euro . These are some of the things we baked; Rice Krispie buns, Flapjacks and decorated digestive biscuits.

We counted the donated money and people donated a total of €143.20 which  is a great amount and we did not expect to get this much. Each and every penny will help those in need .

The Coffee Morning was a great success! Thank you to all who participated!

6th Class Maths – Length

This March Mr.Kennedy’s 6th class were studying length in maths. We went out to our school field in groups of threes and fours and measured it. We split the field into sides and named each side A, B, C, D etc. We  estimated and measured all of the 7 sides. After we measured we came back inside and added up our measurements.

The next day we started a scaled map of the field. In order to do this we divided the measurements by 1000 which was a scale(cm) of 1:1000 to fit on A3 paper. Then we did a scale of 1:500 and then 1:200. We really enjoyed studying length.

Remembering Victims of the Holocaust.

Last November the 6th class pupils planted yellow crocus bulbs. During the week of January 27th, which was the Holocaust Remembrance Day, we checked them. We did this to remember all the Jewish men, women and children who died in World War Two who were forced to wear the star of David. We remember all these Jewish people who died, to make sure a genocide like this never happens again. We hope that by remembering and learning about the Holocaust we can prevent it from happening in the present or in the future.

A big thank you to Kevin who made the wooden Star of David to mark this special flower bed.

Green school’s blog

By: Naoise, Joe and Matthew.

We are reporting from our mini scientist’s project, the members of our project were Naoise, Joe, Leo, and Matthew. Our project was about filtering water. We then thought that the regular option would be buying a filter, we then thought if there was a way to do it at home for less money and we thought of coffee paper. After that we thought of the idea of using natural resources, and decided on that.

We looked up what resources could clean dirty water, and we found the following:

2L Bottle, which would hold our resources

Gravel, which would take out big chunks of debris

Sand, which would take out leftover bits of dirt

Activated Carbon, which would purify the water

Cotton wool, which let water through, but stopped the resources shown above.

Method

Step 1: Prepare the plastic bottle by cutting it in half.

Step 2: Test tap water using litmus paper for acidity in water and its pH value.

Step 3: Mix the tap water and dirt together.

Step 4: Place cotton wool in the cap area.

Step 5: Layer the bottle with activated carbon, gravel and sand.

Step 6: Place the upside-down bottle over plastic cup.

Step 7: pour the dirty water mixture through the bottle [big hole] and wait for water

to filter through all the layers into the plastic cup.

We thought that the natural materials would clean the water but not 100%, as there is no water like this, there is water that’s safe to drink but even that has some beneficial irons and metals. We thought the result would be around 90% clean, and we were right our water was fine once you put some lemon in it.

Our results for our ph (potential of hydrogen) test was a 7 which is what you should aim for.

Our results for the Nitrite test was 0.1 which is acceptable and safe to drink.

Last but not least, the litmus test on the sample came out light blue which is good. We did the Litmus test on some balsamic vinegar and got orange which means that it was high in acidity.

When we brought our filter into school where we were asked to test the water in the school fish tank. We used our filter to see how effective it was. The answer was that it was really efficient; it helped the pH in the fish tank compared to the water without being filtered.

We have tested the fish tank water on a few occasions to see if the water is pure, some test results were lower while others were higher. It was pure enough for the fish to live in. Sometimes people from the other classes help with the fish tank.

Though the water has been successfully filtered , and looks clean and pure , it does not taste as nice as fresh tap water. The filtering process seems to have affected its taste . However , a slice of lemon in the filtered water improves the taste .

Mini-Scientists: What is a Dry Ice Bubble?

For our project we wanted to find out what a dry ice bubble is and how it forms.

We made the dry ice ourselves using a fire extinguisher instead of buying it because it can be expensive and hard to get on time.

We learned a lot during this project. We learned that carbon dioxide is what makes dry ice and that when carbon dioxide mixes with water it makes a solid bubble.

We really enjoyed doing this project and are very grateful for getting the chance of doing the Mini Scientist again this year!

Thank you!

How Social Media Affects Our Health.

We picked this topic because we wanted kids to know the dangers of social media. Our favourite part about doing this project was the surveys on our class and showing the judges, parents and kids on the day. It was a great experience for us and our school. We learned a lot from other projects too. We hope we can use all this information in the future and everyone else can too. We would like to thank the judges from Intel, Mrs. Keane for organising the mini scientist and all the staff for helping.

DEBATING TRIP TO MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY

On the 10th of February the debating team (Orla, Sophie, Gillian, Conor, Ailbhe and Bernard) went to Maynooth University to watch the debating final. When we first arrived the hall was not available so we got a tour of the university first. After about half an hour we went to the Aula Maxima where the debating would commence.

The first debate was the plate final. The topic was ‘Should child labour be a necessity in developing countries’. The opposing team won this debate. The second debate was the cup final also on this topic. The proposing team won this debate. It was a very tight debate and both the teams had brilliant points. After the debate we were presented a certificate for our school and individually.

It was a great day and a good learning experience for the whole team!

– By Orla ,Gillian and Sophie. Rang a 6.

Our school has applied for a grant for an All Weather Pitch for the school .This will also be open to members of sports teams and community groups around Sallins.

At the moment the pitch can only be used about 4 of the 10 months in the school year. If we get this grant, the pitch will be available for the entire year.

Please help us spread the word by signing our online petition using the link below:

All you need is your name and email address. (Please ignore any ‘donation page’, this is not linked to our school, just close the page.)

We will be running a Slogan Competition in the school next week, so get brainstorming! Spread the word.
