Rugby Season So Far

School rugby is back again for another year. We have four teams this year, A, B, C and D. The teams are made up of students from 3rd to 6th class. We have been training since Halloween and we have played two matches since then.

For our first match we travelled to Castleknock in Dublin. In this match it was only the A team playing because it was against 1st years. It was a very wet and windy day so the conditions were very hard to play in. After a tight first half Castleknock led by 5 points. We came back strong in the second half and pulled it back to a draw. They brought on their subs and that won it for them.

Training resumed on Tuesday and each team had a match against C.U.S the following week. Going into this match we were hoping for a win after losing our last match. The conditions were fine that day. The A team had a brilliant 1st half and by the time the whistle blew they were up 42-0. They kept their great lead in the second half and the game finished 75-0. We had the stronger teams on the day as three out of four teams won.

Well done to all the teams and we can’t wait for our next match!

Mini Scientist: How Healthy Is Healthy Food?

Our idea was to find out how much sugar is actually in protein bars . We chose this idea because we have been told that obesity has become a problem in Ireland. What we wanted to do to help is to try to find a way to make protein bars healthier, we chose protein bars because most people think they are healthy but they are not.

We researched to find out how much sugar is in each store bought bar by looking at the table at the back of the packet.

Recipe for oat bar:

Ingredients:

  • 350g of oats
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 180ml of almond milk
  • 2 eggs
  • Vanilla essence ( if wanted )
  • 1 tbsp of sweetener
  • A drizzle of honey

Method:

  1. Put oats into a bowl.
  2. Put wet ingredients into a bowl.
  3. Then stir.
  4. Add your dry ingredients into a bowl and stir.
  5. When done put the mixture into a tray.
  6. Put the tray into the oven for 12 minutes at 180 degrees.

Report

Our report is based on sugar and which protein bar is the best one to buy. It is also based on making our own protein bars using ingredients that you might have at home. We compared the shop bought verses homemade. Our prediction was that the homemade protein bars would taste better than the shop made one and will have less sugar. We also predict it will cost less. We think that the shop made protein bar will have a high amount of sugar.

Mini Scientist School Exhibition

On the Mini Scientists Day we found out that people preferred the nut bar than the vanilla extract one. We also found out that people would buy our homemade protein bars instead of the shop bought ones.

Conclusion

Our conclusion is that the homemade protein bars have less sugar in them than the shop bought ones and costs less. We found out that the worse one you can buy is the Nature Valley Bar with 6.2g of sugar. The best one you can buy is the Lidl brand Meal Pro with 0.8g of sugar. Our conclusion is that the homemade protein bars are healthier than the shop bought ones.
